"Live your life by a compass, not a clock."

All clocks seem almost ordinary, with the same thing over again. There is always numbers to tell you the hour, typically 2-3 hands that represent the hour, minute and second hand. Typically, clocks are always flat; whether on the side of a building, on a wall, in a watch, or in on a microwave or some other appliance. I created a clock that tells time without numbers or letters that was 3-Dimensional trying to break that steriotype.

Using Shape and form, the top created an interesting amount of dimension where it is suspended above the clock centered. The Compass rose also helps clarify the hours for those who aren’t as good with proportions. The red “True North” arrow shows that it is twelve-o-clock, the purple arrows signify the west and the east.  Below the compass rose an actual world map rotates to represent the hour hand of the clock. These pieces working in unison complete a clock and a compass. Color theory was used to create contrast and distinguish north the other directions.

Negative: It was much harder then expected to make the design as planned. Circles are much harder to cut than originally expected. In hindsight, it would have been better to make the clock twice. If it had been done twice, a practice clock and a final clock would have been created to specify details that originally weren’t foreseen.  Then it would’ve been understood to drill the hole for the clock last. Center points on a man-made object are much harder to find because of the variations created when doing things by hand. When creating things, a lot of depth must be put into the thought process. More planning should have been involved overall. 

Positive: The design was rather simple but still get the concept across. It was a great learning experience learning. Learning how to use the tools and applying them into making the first “wood-shop” project I had ever done was an awesome experience!  The concept is rather simple allowing the onlookers to quickly estimate what the idea behind it is.  The clock has actual functionality, and ability to gain a round about time.

This clock got the point across because it relates time in a way that doesn’t count every minute. Instead, it encourages people to life instead of watching the minute hand. If people pay too much attention to how much time everything takes and what time it is, then they will forget to live their life. The clock suggests to onlookers that they should use their time to travel and to enjoy life, but much of the time everyone remains to stuck in the immediate reality. Americans are some of the least likely to travel and use their vacation time according to an article on LinkedIn. Also, the concept quote could act as an analogy to taking risks and exploring regardless of where you are at in life. Go against the status norm. It’s not too late to live life, so don’t let time “run out”.
